Fracture Clinic
Our Fracture Clinic offers structured assessment and management of suitable fractures and acute musculoskeletal injuries within a general practice setting. Our Clinic supports patients who require prompt medical evaluation and follow-up care for certain broken bones and acute injuries.
Led by Dr Mohammed Tamer, MBBS, FRACGP, the clinic offers clinical assessment, plaster splint application and ongoing monitoring where appropriate. The aim is to provide timely care in a calm and professional environment, with referral to orthopaedic specialists when required.
Assessment and Diagnosis
Accurate diagnosis is essential in fracture management. During your appointment, your GP will take a detailed history of the injury and perform a clinical examination. Where imaging such as X-ray is required, this will be arranged through an appropriate radiology provider.
Once imaging results are available, your GP will review the findings and discuss the recommended management plan. This may involve immobilisation, monitoring or referral depending on the type and severity of the fracture.
If your injury requires hospital-based or specialist intervention, referral will be arranged promptly.
Fractures and Injuries We Commonly Manage
Our Fracture Clinic manages a range of fractures and soft-tissue injuries that can be safely assessed in a general practice setting. These may include:
- Wrist fractures, including distal radius and scaphoid injuries
- Thumb and finger fractures
- Elbow fractures
- Ankle fractures
- Certain foot fractures, including 5th metatarsal injuries
- Sprains and ligament injuries
All patients are assessed individually to determine whether management within the clinic is appropriate. Some injuries may require direct hospital or specialist care.
Plaster Immobilisation and Follow-Up Care
Where clinically appropriate, plaster splints or backslabs can be applied to stabilise the injured area and support healing. Proper immobilisation reduces movement at the fracture site and helps control symptoms as recovery progresses.
Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing, reassess symptoms and determine when immobilisation can be reduced or removed. Recovery time varies depending on the nature of the injury and individual health factors. Where additional rehabilitation is required, referral to physiotherapy or orthopaedic specialists may be arranged.
When to Seek Emergency Care
Some injuries require immediate hospital assessment rather than management in a general practice setting. You should seek urgent emergency care if there is:
- Severe deformity of a limb
- Loss of sensation or circulation
- An open fracture where bone has broken through the skin
- Significant bleeding
- Suspected head or spinal injury
If you are uncertain about the severity of your injury, please contact our clinic for guidance.
